A Living History Performance Brings the Past to Life with Two Iconic Hawaiian Figures
Dive into the rich history of Hawai‘i in E Ho‘okipa, a dynamic living history performance that will transport audiences through time to explore pivotal moments in Hawaiian culture. The event features a compelling portrayal of two iconic Hawaiian women—Hannah Pi‘ilani Jones of Kahuku Ranch, Ka‘ū, in the 1880s, and Queen Lili‘uokalani at her residence, Washington Place, in Honolulu, in the early 1900s.
This immersive performance, set against the backdrop of Hawaii’s vibrant heritage, will offer a unique opportunity to connect with the stories of resilience, strength, and cultural pride. E Ho‘okipa invites the audience into an intimate encounter with the past, through the lives and voices of these historic figures.
Hannah Pi‘ilani Jones, a renowned cultural advocate and educator, is brought to life by Alya-Joy Kanehailua, whose performance promises to honor Jones’ contributions to preserving Hawaiian culture. Queen Lili‘uokalani, Hawaii’s beloved last reigning monarch, is portrayed by the esteemed Jackie Pualani Johnson. Johnson’s portrayal of the Queen will highlight her personal life as she dedicated herself to her unwavering commitment to her people during one of the most pivotal times in Hawaiian history.
Through dynamic storytelling, E Ho‘okipa will allow the audience to witness the voices of the past, examining the legacy of these women in the context of Hawaii’s struggle for sovereignty, culture, and self-determination. The performance is designed not only to educate but also to inspire current and future generations to honor and protect Hawaiian history and traditions.
E Ho‘okipa is a celebration of Hawaiian resilience, and its powerful message of cultural perseverance is one that resonates today as much as it did in the past.
