A Living History Performance: The Hawai‘i Sojourn

Step into old Hawai‘i through the vivid perspectives of adventurer Isabella Bird and Kahuku native Hannah Pi‘ilani Jones in this captivating living history performance, The Hawai‘i Sojourn. Directed by Jackie Pualani Johnson and presented by Hilo Community Players, this production explores Hawai‘i’s landscapes, traditions, and people through historical letters and first-person accounts adapted by Victoria Nālani Kneubuhl and Jackie Pualani Johnson.

Experience the stunning portrayal of Isabella Bird by Karen Anne Moore, a seasoned actress whose global experiences and theatrical depth bring Bird’s 1873 Kona adventures to life. Walk with Bird as she rides horseback through Ka‘anahā and Kealapuali, marvels at Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and explores lava caves in the misty uplands of Kona Mauka.

In a compelling dual narrative, Alya-Joy Kanehailua embodies Hannah Pi‘ilani Jones, a cultural advocate and educator whose voice enriches the story with deeply rooted Native Hawaiian perspectives. Kanehailua’s performance—hailed as “a magnificent preservation of significant history”—honors Jones’ legacy and the enduring spirit of Hawaiian culture.
